Engine House Museum

Main Street (Route 2)
Erving, MA

Erving’s equivalent of a historical society. Adjacent to Freight House Antiques, the museum is housed in the former Erving Fire Station and helps to recount Erving’s history as a major industrial town. The Engine House carries a substantial collection of photographs and scrapbooks, as well as a kitchen, living room, and parlor decorated in the style of the late 1800s and early 1900s; the old firehouse bell outside the museum serves as a reminder of the building’s prior use.

Harvard ForestHarvard Forest

Petersham, MA

Website

The 3,000-acre Harvard Forest, mostly in Petersham, offers a wealth of recreational and educational possibilities, and is a designated Wildlife Viewing Area. Among the miles of trails are ¼-mile and 1½-mile interpretive loop trails (the latter with a side loop through a black gum swamp) and a hike up an old road to a fire tower on Prospect Hill with a magnificent view over the countryside. Established in 1907, Harvard Forest is primarily a world-renowned research center, conducting long-term ecological research and studies of all aspects of the forest—biology, soils, economics, history, and more—as well as collaborating with scientists from numerous other institutions and with educators throughout New England. It is also the home of the Fisher Museum and its dioramas exploring forest history. More ...

The Orange Historical Society offers a chance for tourists and residents alike to learn about a community with a very rich, if often underplayed, history. A mass producer of sewing machines, tapioca, and hydraulic machines, Orange was (contrary to popular belief) the site of the country’s first automobile factory: Grout Brothers manufactured steam-powered automobiles, one of which is on display in the barn section of the Orange Historical Society. In addition to this vehicle, which traces back to the year 1904, the barn contains a fire pumper and other industrial items. Housed in a Victorian home with identical furnishings, the Orange Historical Society also includes a special children’s room, military room, and alumni room.

The Petersham Historical Society and stunning town common are two prominent components within this district, which is included in the National Register of Historic Places. Before entering the Historical Society, view the monument to Shay’s Rebellion. Following the Revolutionary War, a debt-stricken group of farmers led by Daniel Shay rebelled against the Massachusetts State Senate in light of property foreclosures and high land taxes. Shay’s Rebellion is directly linked to the ratification of the Constitution, and the monument marks the location of the final battle. The Petersham Historical Society includes various displays of town artifacts, namely the fully-renovated Petersham stagecoach, and offers programs and events throughout the year.

In 1938, this vast area was home to four towns flooded as part of the Quabbin construction.  The Swift River Historical Society exists to preserve the legacies of these four towns: Dana, Enfield, Greenwich, and Prescott. As residents in these towns were forced to leave behind their homes, farms, and businesses, the Historical Society aims to care for their former objects and reminiscences. The organization also provides a glimpse at life in the Swift River Valley prior to the events of the Quabbin Reservoir.

Mountain Road

Mass.Wildlife@state.ma.us

The focal point of the Tully Trail and of the Tully Mountain Wildlife Management Area, Tully Mountain rises 1,163 feet above sea level and humps dramatically above the relatively flat land around it. Geologically, it is a remnant of ancient mountain building that upthrust the northern Appalachians 400 million years ago. From the northwest it also shows the effect of the glaciers—the northern face ground smooth, the southern face left much more irregular by deposited debris. A loop trail of about 1½ miles leads to outcrops near the summit that afford magnificent views of the surrounding land and waters and of more distant mountains. And Tully Mountain not only offers peace and pleasure to people but also—because of its numerous types of habitats—provides a home for a rich array of plants and animals. More...

An inspiring work of public sculpture, the Wayside Cross at St. Francis of Assisi Church celebrates Lithuanian heritage in the center of Athol. Lithuania is known as the “land of crosses,” with wooden crosses in more than 300 styles found throughout the countryside. The Athol cross, made of rust-colored steel and featuring stylized tulips, blends this traditional spirit with modern materials and design. It was created by architect Ramojus Mozoliauskas and erected in 1979.
