One of two lovely recreational lakes in Athol (the other is Silver Lake ), Lake Ellis offers a great beach and picnic area. Boaters also enjoy the lake (no wakes, please), and anglers aim for bass, pickerel, bluegill and hornpout. Because the Quabbin Anglers Organization stocks trout for their annual ice fishing derby, a summertime line may also pull up a trout. More...

An inspiring work of public sculpture, the Wayside Cross at St. Francis of Assisi Church celebrates Lithuanian heritage in the center of Athol. Lithuania is known as the “land of crosses,” with wooden crosses in more than 300 styles found throughout the countryside. The Athol cross, made of rust-colored steel and featuring stylized tulips, blends this traditional spirit with modern materials and design. It was created by architect Ramojus Mozoliauskas and erected in 1979.
