French King Bridge

Rte. 2, Erving, MA

A spectacular fall foliage vista over the CT River with trails into French King Gorge.

Description:

For one of the most spectacular views in the North Quabbin - and one of the best spots for autumn leaf-peeping - stop and linger a while at the French King Bridge where Route 2 connecting Erving and Gill crosses the French King Gorge on the Connecticut River, with the Millers River flowing into the Connecticut below and the French King Rock just upstream.

Bridge, gorge, and rock honor a legend that a French officer sheltered his troop here during the French and Indian War in the mid-1700s, but today the bridge is dedicated to long-time Congressional Representative Silvio O. Conte (1921-1991), who promoted the 1992 reconstruction of the bridge and the establishment of a national fish and wildlife refuge in the Connecticut River watershed. In 1932, the year it was built, the French King Bridge was named the most beautiful of its class in the nation by the American Institute of Steel Construction.
