Doane's Falls & Coddings Meadow

Athol Road, Royalston, MA

Spectacular series of waterfalls through steep gorge. Easy walk on opposite side of road to scenic Coddings Meadow.

Description:

Doane's Falls is actually a series of impressive waterfalls, created as Lawrence Brook crashes down under a beautiful stone bridge and roars through boulders and along stony slabs on its 200-foot drop to the Tully River and then to Tully Lake. Accompanied by the roar of the water, visitors can descend by a beautiful half-mile woodland trail, and either return the same way or loop out to Doane Hill Rd. for an easier walk. Across Athol Rd. from the parking area is another trail (¾ miles), paralleling a quiet section of Lawrence Brook and leading to the tranquil Codding’s Meadow. Here blooms mountain laurel in late spring, and cardinal flower and Joe Pye weed in late summer.

Directions:

From Rte. 2, take Exit 17 and follow Rte. 32N; watch turns carefully. Cross Millers River bridge, bear right onto Chestnut Hill Ave., which becomes Athol Rd. Go 4 miles to parking on left.
