Millers River Wildlife Management Area (1)Athol, Royalston & Phillipston, MA River, forest, shrub corridors, wetlands - a wide range of habitats indeed, some close to downtown Athol. Description:Extensive wetlands in the north, fed by numerous brooks; a shrubby corridor along a powerline right-of-way; rugged, forested terrain with steep slopes into the Millers River valley in the south; miles of frontage on the river—the 2,600-acre, multi-parcel Millers River Wildlife Management Area boasts a wide range of habitats. The area presents a remarkably wild aspect to visitors, particularly where paired with the Bearsden Conservation Area on the south shore. Another section of the WMA spans both sides of the river near downtown Athol. Moose, deer, coyote, raccoon, snowshoe hare, grouse, turkey, and forest birds live here, and some pheasant are stocked. Aquatic fur-bearers, waterfowl, and native brook and stocked trout sport in the river itself and in Lawrence Brook. Anglers should be aware, however, that this is a catch-and-release area. Contact:
